Micanopy Man Arrested for Possession of Moonshine

On September 11, 1964, a 58-year-old Micanopy man named Jessie Walker, Jr. was arrested and charged with possession of moonshine. Beverage agents, along with a deputy from the Alachua County Sheriff’s department arrested Jessie Walker, Jr. after raiding his home and finding 3 gallons of moonshine and 2 1/2 gallons of a special “home brew”. Jessie Walker, Jr. admitted to ownership of the illegal whiskey but said that he had purchased the moonshine.

After the 1862 Revenue Act created by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives’s (ATF) it became illegal to produce moonshine without paying taxes on it. The penalties for producing moonshine were severe, including fines, imprisonment, and the seizure of property.

Jessie Walker, Jr. was the son of Jessie and Mamie Walker, born in Evinston, Florida in 1907.
